Identify the barriers

Remedial

No printed word, nor spoken plea Can teach young minds what they should be, Not all the books on all the shelves – But what teachers are themselves.

Rudyard Kipling

Our Remedial Unit at St Michael’s tries to eliminate all obstacles that impede the learner’s progress towards future success in her schooling.

Teachers have daily contact with learners and are the first to identify pupils lagging  because of learning barriers. However, it is not always necessary, and in some cases not advisable, to refer every child with a learning problem to other institutions.

If the problem cannot be dealt with in the classroom, the teacher will refer the learner to the remedial unit.

Mrs A Lombard

Hons B Ed (Special Needs – Support Teaching), B Prim Ed (Jnr Prim) (UFS)

Mrs. Lombard assists learners from the Pre-Primary, Foundation Phase, Intermediate phase as well as the Senior Phase learners. The remedial teacher tries to identify the barriers to learning by testing the learners using the following standardised tests:

• U.C.T Diagnostic Tests in spelling; reading and speed reading
• Essi Tests – Language proficiency test in spelling and reading
• Vassi Test – Mathematics proficiency test San Diego Reading test
• DRL – Diagnostic Reading and Language tests

A remedial programme will be devised that will enable the learner to cope with her grade level. A learner is seen at least twice weekly, depending on the severity of her learning barrier, for 30 minutes at a time.

Our remedial department also provides assistance with concessions for learners who need assistance during assessments and examinations. Learners with more severe problems will be referred to the nearest Child Guidance Clinic, where careful diagnosis is made and where intensive therapy can be given. The remedial teacher pays attention to reading, spelling, writing, and Mathematics.

Support from class teachers, remedial teachers, and parents can make a big difference in a learner’s schooling career.

Foster creativity and innovative thinking

Library

A very well equipped and functioning library. We have a vast variety of books, which also include resource materials.

During school hours, Grades 1 to 6 have library periods, where they are allowed to check out books and do fun activities if time permits, and our senior learners make use of the library during break and after school. Many learners also prefer to do their homework in the library and to study here after they have written their exams for that specific day. It is always a pleasure to have them work in the library. We also have a reading corner where they are free to sit and relax whilst reading.

We have 10 diligent library monitors who, amongst other duties, ensure that the books are neatly arranged on the shelves.

The archive and boardroom also form part of the school library.

We have a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the library.

Mrs. Veldschoen, our Librarian, is there to oversee everything and to ensure that all new books, which we buy on a yearly basis, are recorded on the system. She competently handles all book-related queries and maintains the high standard expected of a school library.

After school care

Afternoon Care

At St Michael’s, we understand that many parents need peace of mind knowing their daughters are cared for in a safe and nurturing environment after the school day ends. Our Daycare programme provides a warm, structured space where girls can relax, complete homework, and enjoy meaningful play until they are collected.

The programme balances rest, learning, and fun. Girls are guided through their homework with gentle supervision, ensuring they receive support where needed, while also having time to play outdoors, build friendships, and engage in creative activities.

Our dedicated staff fosters respect, responsibility, and kindness, creating a space where each girl feels secure and valued.

For working parents, Daycare offers reassurance. For the girls, it provides consistency, companionship, and a happy close to the school day.

The future is robots

Robotics

At this moment coding and robotics are the two fastest developing fields in the world.

The robotics club aims to make learners part of this journey. We are preparing learners for a future that heavily relies on technology, especially robotics. Robots are all around us and help to make our lives easier, from your toaster to your automatic espresso machine. There are new inventions and career paths opening daily that your daughter can be a part of.

At robotics, we teach your daughter to build and programme her own robot. Robotics encourages learners to solve problems in a creative way that combines physical, building the robot, mental, programming and critical thinking, and sometimes emotional, the success of seeing your robot in action, aspects. Learners also learn the importance of teamwork as they have to work in teams to complete various challenges.

The challenges that learners complete also form part of an initiative to form a robotics team that will compete against other schools, and possibly on a national level as well. The challenges are standardised across all provinces.

One thing is for certain: robote are the future.
