St Michael’s debaters take part in the Motheo District Debating League for High School learners. It is hosted in the Motheo District and affiliated with the Free State Schools Provincial Debating Board. The Motheo District Debating League has two streams of competition: A Junior (Grade 8-9) and a Senior (Grade 10-12) Division.

All debates take place in English, according to the World’s School Debating rules and follow the prescribed format. The first 3 rounds of the 2025 League were held on Saturday 22 February. St Michael’s entered 2 Junior teams and 2 Senior teams.

Oratile Bogatsu was Best Speaker, Junior SMS A won 2/3 rounds and SMS B 1/3. Senior SMS A won 1/3 and SMS B 2/3.
